Google Software Engineering Manager, Google Translate in Bengaluru, India

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.

  • 12 years of experience in distributed software development.

  • 5 years of experience leading software products involving programming languages (e.g., Java, Kotlin).

  • 3 years of experience in a technical leadership role overseeing projects, with 2 years of experience in a people management, supervision/team leadership role.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, or a related technical field.

  • 3 years of experience in developing Android applications.

  • 3 years of experience working in a changing organization.

  • Ability to recruit and mentor new developers on the platform.

As a Software Engineering Manager, you will build and lead a new engineering team to take over full responsibility for the Google Translate App for Android. You will expand the usefulness of the app and grow its adoption by adding new translation features, with particular attention to the needs of emerging markets and low resource language users. You will have full ownership of the Android client code, and will partner with the rest of the Translate team on the development of core translation capabilities.You will also partner with other teams at Google that want to develop Android-specific translation capabilities.

  • Set and communicate team priorities that support the broader organization's goals. Align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams.

  • Set clear expectations with individuals based on their level and role, and align to the broader organization's goals. Meet regularly with individuals to discuss performance and development, and provide feedback and coaching.

  • Develop the mid-term technical roadmap within the scope of the team. Evolve the roadmap to meet anticipated future requirements and infrastructure needs.

  • Design, guide, and vet systems designs within the scope of the broader area, and write product or system development code to solve problems.

  • Review code developed by other engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency).
