Job Description

The Times is looking for a deputy news editor to work with our team of award-winning reporters and deliver brilliant news stories for our digital and print platforms.

You must have experience working either on a newsdesk or as a senior reporter for a national news provider. You will have precise commissioning and copy-editing skills and the ability to conceive strong story ideas to present at news conference.

You will be able to demonstrate your ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines and with rigorous accuracy. You must have an insatiable appetite for news and the skill to spot stories where others might miss them.

Responsibilities

  • Successfully manage productive relationships with the associate editor, newsdesk and journalists across the newsroom

  • Work with editors, writers and reporters to conceive, commission and edit exclusive agenda-setting news stories for a print and digital audience

  • Use data tools to help guide commissioning and construct headlines

  • Demonstrate an understanding of what works best for digital, offering content that is truly distinctive

  • Attend news conference as required and present the news list to the editor

  • Forward-plan, working with journalists on long-range projects and big campaigns

  • Use social networking and other digital platforms for content generation and to promote The Times content

  • Represent The Times on radio and TV especially on our own internal stations

  • Assist the senior news team with people and budget management

Skills and experience

  • Experience working as a news editor or senior reporter for a national newspaper or major news organisation

  • Demonstrable expertise in news and current affairs

  • Experience helping to manage people and budgets

  • An ability to work under pressure, to tight deadlines and with rigorous accuracy

  • Persuasive presentation skills, well-developed interpersonal skills, with the ability to problem-solve and negotiate positive outcomes

  • Able to communicate succinctly and effectively

  • Able to use social media platforms to engage current and new audiences for The Times

  • Experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams

  • A strong understanding of editorial compliance and regulatory issues
