Amazon’s Global Realty (GR) Risk Operations & Resilience (ROR) organization is seeking a Senior Manager to lead the six-person Disaster Recovery & Investigations (DRI) Recovery team within Europe. This candidate will lead a team of people who work in parallel with site leadership teams to drive a streamlined response and oversee physical recovery from escalations and incidents impacting our real estate assets in accordance with Amazon/DRI safety policies and processes. This candidate will support a wide range of business units within Operations, to include fulfillment centers, distribution centers, delivery stations, and similar industrial warehouse occupancies. This candidate’s scope includes the coordination and project management of construction, equipment and restoration vendors, driving efficient decision making throughout the physical repair and recovery processes. They will also support inventory assessment and disposition efforts for incidents involving damage to inventory. As the senior leader of the team, this candidate will be accountable to incorporating key learnings from continuous improvement efforts and after-action reviews to improve future responses. They will partner closely with multiple stakeholders, including Operations (core customer), WHS, Environmental, Asset Management, and Legal. This position will run in parallel to the North American Disaster Recovery team, with support from DRI’s Crisis Management and Investigations teams.

This position will be based in Europe (EU), with regular travel to disaster sites throughout the UK and EU, and with occasional travel to the US for business meetings. Due to the nature of supporting unplanned events this candidate should be in close proximity to transit (air and rail) with the ability to travel regularly to Luxembourg and London to meet with core stakeholders. They will manage an on-call rotation (including after hours, weekends, and holidays) for emergency response support. The role requires short-notice travel up to 40% within Europe, with focus on France, Germany, Poland, Spain, and the UK.

A successful candidate has a customer centric approach, can build and motivate teams under high-stress conditions, high ethical standards and strong judgement/critical thinking. You have experience managing and working with General Contractors, Remediation Vendors, Industrial Hygienists or similar professionals to assess conditions, develop repair plans, and present executable options in a field-based environment.

Key job responsibilities

  • Manage and deploy your team through rotational assignments, providing field-based leadership of damage assessments, repair plans and recovery timeline for damaged buildings, equipment, and inventory

  • Develop and execute a recovery plan for damaged assets with target recovery timelines that follow the critical path. Hold your team accountable for developing and executing the recovery plan, including identification of upstream/downstream interdependencies.

  • Lead your team through the collection and reporting of key metrics throughout each recovery, including drafting or editing daily flash updates and closing reports produced by the team.

  • Identify and coordinate disaster recovery vendors, including structural engineers, general contractors, and qualified professionals who can assess the structure, utilities, equipment, health and environmental impacts, to develop creative and safe solutions for optimal recovery.

  • Lead or participate in after-action reviews, drawings insights from key learnings and metrics to improve response efforts.

  • Develop and improve safety and process initiatives to meet key recovery metrics focused on time, cost, safety and quality

  • Implement operational safety standards ensuring effective partnership with local and regional Workplace Health and Safety (WHS).

  • Oversee the use of safety standards, roles and responsibilities, DRI tools, auditing, baseline metrics for KPIs of disaster recovery.

  • Coordinate personal protective equipment (PPE) training and resources for DRI members. Work closely with Operations, Loss Prevention, Risk Management, and WHS on recoveries

  • Responsible for ensuring that DRI programs and processes are compliant and meet industry best practices throughout Europe

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Experience in managing physical repairs or remediation for fires, floods, hurricanes, or other disasters impacting commercial/industrial buildings, assets, and/or key infrastructure

  • Experience as a Project Manager, Construction Manager, Project Engineer/Architect or similar in commercial construction experience

  • People Management experience, with a record of proven leadership.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with ability to communicate quickly, clearly, and effectively.

  • Availability for on-call rotations after hours and weekends for emergency response support in North America.

  • Ability to travel up to 40% domestically to support recovery efforts for complex events with higher hazards.

  • Experience interfacing with and influencing site leaders and senior business leaders.

  • Ability to identify, develop and implement department goals and strategies.

  • Advanced knowledge of design and repair practices of commercial buildings, critical building systems, and real estate infrastructure.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, root-cause analysis investigation experience, ability to innovate, and attention to detail.

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or similar with ability to set timelines, milestones, and track toward completion within a high-stress, fast paced environment.

  • Amazon operations experience in leadership position with familiarity with inventory disposition.
