Position Overview:

Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL), a SLAC Directorate at Stanford University, is a national scientific user facility providing synchrotron radiation for research in biology, chemistry, engineering, environmental science, material science, medicine, and physics. SSRL operates and maintains the 3GeV electron storage ring SPEAR3, the associated injector facility, and synchrotron radiation beam lines on SPEAR3.

SSRL is seeking an outstanding technician who will be part of a dynamic scientific research environment. In this position, you will primarily provide technical support for activities at the Soft X-ray Group in the Materials Sciences Division.

The specific responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Executing various technical tasks and performing routine maintenance.

  • Maintain, modify, repair, and troubleshoot equipment and experimental systems.

  • Participate in developing, prototyping, procuring, and commissioning novel scientific equipment.

  • Update and maintain documentation related to protocols.

  • Establish, communicate, and enforce compliance with health and safety policies and procedures.

  • Other duties may also be assigned.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or scientific discipline, or 5 years of equivalent work experience after high-school diploma or combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Experience applying scientific and engineering principles and practices to perform technical services and support.

  • Experience with mechanical systems. Understanding of machining and other fabrication techniques related to mechanical systems design.

  • Experience with software applications, systems, or programs relevant to the job. Ability to interpret and determine validity of data and check own work.

  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as work unsupervised within adequate procedural guidelines.

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

In addition, preferred requirements include experience in the following areas:

  • Strong hands-on skill in assembling complex mechanical systems and handling delicate instruments.

  • Extensive and relevant experience with scientific instrumentation or industrial control systems is desired.

  • Experience with ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) systems and assembly is preferred.

The expected pay range for this position is $109,000 - $129,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
