Position Overview:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory’s Office of Strategic Communications & External Affairs (SC&EA) is seeking a skilled and professional Social Media Lead to join the External Communications team. Reporting to the Head of External Communications, the Social Media Lead will manage how the laboratory presents itself to a global audience on multiple social media channels and how it engages with digital communities through those channels. This position supports an integrated external communications strategy centered around delivering key messages in effective and impactful ways to a broad range of stakeholders, including internal and public audiences, news media and policymakers.

The successful candidate will be a highly organized social media enthusiast with a deep knowledge of social media platforms, audiences, best practices, and trends. As SC&EA’s primary contact for social media, the Social Media Lead will create, edit and post social media content, engage with social media audiences, and efficiently coordinate complex workflows for a diverse group of communicators and content creators. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate an outstanding reputational awareness when pursuing promotional opportunities and managing institutional risks associated with social media.

Using an analytical and creative mindset, the Social Media Lead will develop, implement and evaluate short- and long-term plans for putting a strategic spotlight on SLAC’s mission, research and people via the laboratory’s social media channels. They will closely partner with the News Center Lead and Media Relations Lead within External Communications to align strategic messages across communication channels to ensure messages have impact and reach audiences where they are. Collaborating with SC&EA team members and other partners within and outside of the lab, the Social Media Lead will explore new avenues for social media content creation and audience engagement to enhance the visibility, reach and impact of our stories.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for ownership and management of multiple social media channels. Oversee editorial strategy and voice of content on those channels and make sure content matches SC&EA’s brand strategy.

  • Manage development and implementation of a social media strategy in alignment with the overarching External Communications strategy, including a strategy for how to engage social media audiences and fundamentally impact their relationship with SLAC.

  • Lead community-building on social media platforms.

  • Manage reputational issues and other high priorities on social media channels.

  • Coordinate, partner and collaborate with stakeholders within and outside of SLAC to achieve External Communications, SC&EA and lab goals.

  • May oversee or supervise staff in the development and implementation of social media plans.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor's degree and minimum 5 years of relevant experience or a combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Enthusiasm for the use of social media and for engagement with online communities.

  • Deep knowledge of the social media landscape, platforms, tools, best practices, audiences and trends.

  • Outstanding institutional savviness, reputational awareness, and awareness for brand, tone and voice.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong strategic outlook and ability to provide leadership in developing and executing short- and long-term social media plans.

  • Strong organizational skills, project management skills, and ability to coordinate a diverse team of content creators.

  • Experience with managing social media calendars and complex workflows.

  • Familiarity with SEO, metrics analysis, and other means of analyzing and boosting impact of social media posts.

  • Ability to create compelling social media posts that resonate with audiences and convey messages effectively.

In addition, preferred requirements include:

The expected pay range for this position is $131,000 - $154,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
