Job Summary

To serve our important constituencies, the Stena Center is looking for a Director of Research who will build and lead an expert panel charged with answering a range of fintech-relevant academic and applied analytic questions.

Equal parts research expert, analytics consultant, and senior stakeholder manager, the Director of Research will leverage and expand their existing network to identify domain experts (e.g., economics, finance, psychology, political science, data science, and advanced analytics) and connect them to the Stena Center’s portfolio of incoming expertise requests from companies, policy groups, and regulators.

The collaboration and coordination between the schools of engineering, business and law will be a critical responsibility for this role that requires working directly with the Stena Center Academic Director’s and other associated faculty.

This role will be responsible for ensuring that research questions are well specified, experts are properly matched, workflow is well managed, and results are clear, accurate, and delivered to the standards of the Stena Center. Output will include white papers, peer-reviewed research articles, and policy briefs which, collectively, will serve to strengthen and expand the fintech ecosystem.

Responsibilities

  • Convene expert panel focused on (a) economics, public policy, and social science research and (b) solving high priority fintech business problems through applied analytics

  • Review and prioritize incoming expertise/work requests, understand critical questions and required deliverables, and steward an intellectual marketplace between the work and the expert panel

  • Review research panel output for quality, rigor, and topicality; provide feedback ranging from copy-editing to methodology

  • Steward partnership agreements, in collaboration with University of Utah legal staff, to include data treatment/protection, intellectual property, and technology transfer.

  • Coordiante with Office of Sponsored Projects and other research offices to determine optimal processes and cost structures for projects

  • Collaborate with University of Utah information technology colleagues to address data transfer, storage, protection, and reporting needs

  • Liasion with Stena Center academic chairs and associated faculty on research proposals and other academic programs

  • Communicate methods and findings through presentations, reports, and other publications

  • Additional tasks as assigned by Executive Director

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree + four years of related experience or Bachelor’s degree + eight years of related experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).

Preferences

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (or better) in a quantitative and/or experimental discipline (e.g., economics, statistics, or behavioral science), with a strong track record of professional publication

  • At least eight years of direct or indirect people leadership focused on academic research, business analytics, and/or data science; success in this role will require demonstrated expertise in experimental design, the ability to identify high-value ideas and direct resources appropriately, and the sophistication to work alongside seasoned professionals, provide effective feedback, and ensure third-party work product is of the highest quality

  • Existing professional network that includes both academic and applied analytics professionals and a willingness to continually expand that network through conference attendance and proactive outreach

  • Ability to manage a portfolio of work, ensuring that progress and roadblocks are well communicated, timelines are met, and resource plans flex (as needed)

  • Intellectual curiosity and a desire to find better answers, combined with a pragmatic outlook, alongside a commitment to collaboration and client success

  • Superior ambiguity tolerance and problem solving skills and the ability to convey complex information (both written and oral) to a wide range of stakeholders
