Amazon Data Engineer, AWS Central Economics in Seattle, Washington

Description

The mission of the AWS Central Economics (ACE) team is to drive best practices for objectively applying economics and data science in decision making across AWS. We collaborate with AWS science and business teams to identify, frame, and analyze complex and ambiguous problems of the highest priority for AWS. We use and develop trusted science to provide our customers with actionable knowledge.

Key job responsibilities

Data is the foundation of ACE’s business and its availability and quality impact our ability to deliver the models and analyses needed to drive important decisions across AWS. We are seeking a Data Engineer with strong technical, analytical, and communication skills to join our team. This role will be a key member of the ACE - Engineering team, based in Seattle, WA. Collaborating closely with ACE economists, data scientists, and applied scientists, you will be involved in conceiving, advocating for, designing to scale, and executing solutions to broadly support ACE. This includes building data automation solutions, constructing end-to-end infrastructure for deploying science models, and maintaining and running continuous deployment of ACE product systems.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or technical field such as Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • 7+ years of experience with technical architectures of data warehouses, ETL/ELT processes, reporting/analytic tools, and big data tools such as Spark, Kafka, Hive, Airflow.

  • 5+ years of demonstrated experience with designing and building scalable data pipelines and infrastructure.

  • Proficiency in data modeling and SQL with Redshift, Oracle, MySQL, and Columnar Databases, hands-on experience with AWS services, and experience with query optimization and automatic data quality guardrails and alerts.

  • Ability to identify, prioritize and provide trade-offs for technical improvements and optimizations for the deployment of scientific models in a production environment.

  • Skills to mentor and guide other engineers, and to work closely with scientists, particularly to productionalize scientific prototypes.

  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities concurrently and drive projects to completion.

  • Proficiency in software engineering concepts and development lifecycle.

  • Working knowledge of at least one programming language widely used at Amazon such as Python, Java or Scala.

  • Ability to develop applications and systems that leverage large datasets and build infrastructure around automatic run, maintenance and diagnosis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in an engineering or technical field such as Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, or Engineering.

  • Experience with AWS services and production CDK development workflows, including Brazil, S3, Lambda, EMR, RDS, Data-pipeline, and other big data technologies.

  • Proficiency in composing Advanced SQL (analytical functions) and skills in query performance tuning.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $105,700/year in our lowest geographic market up to $205,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
