GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the supervision of the Captain, the Engineer responds to emergency calls and planned events to protect life property and the environment; drives, operates, and maintains fire apparatus and equipment; performs specialized technical duties related to firefighting, rescue, hazardous materials response and administration of basic and advanced life support to the sick and injured; participates in fire prevention, community education, community wellness, training and facility maintenance activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Meet performance standards established with direct supervisor.
  • Job attendance is required, except for authorized leave.
  • Respond to and assist at a wide variety of calls for service including but not limited to fires, rescue situations, haz-mat incidents, medical emergencies, disasters etc.
  • Identify and implement appropriate tactics to evacuate occupants, rescue victims, protect exposures, perform fire control and extinguishment, forcible entry, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul activities; raise and climb ladders; connect, extend and operate hose lines and perform other related duties as needed to protect life, property and the environment at fire, haz-mat, and rescue incidents.
  • Respond to emergency medical incidents; triage patients and determine appropriate medical care, provide basic and advanced life support, and transport the sick and injured to definitive care.
  • Drive department apparatus, operate fire pumps, aerial ladders and other fixed and loose tools and equipment; use hydraulic theory and mathematics to calculate and provide correct pump pressure to ensure required water pressure at appliances; monitor operating systems and make appropriate adjustments as required.
  • Provide community education and wellness services, station tours and educational classes.
  • Conduct daily inspection of condition of readiness of apparatus and equipment; perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance of apparatus and equipment; clean wash and maintain apparatus and equipment; maintain the fire & EMS stations and grounds; maintain inventory of equipment and supplies; and participate in periodic testing of ladders, fire hose, SCBA, pumps, and other apparatus equipment.
  • Perform a variety of administrative duties including preparing reports and forms, conducting research, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Participate in city and department training, which may include firefighting techniques, emergency medical care, and the proper use of all equipment and related tools.
  • May be required to fill in at the Captain position.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Must be able to meet attendance and punctuality requirements for this position. Must abide by all city policies and procedures. Must work well with others and be a team player.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years full-time firefighter experience; or five (5) years volunteer/part-time firefighter experience.

Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to command a control fire and EMS incidents.
  • Ability to work with the public.
  • Learn the layout of the city's water m in and street numbering system(s).
  • Perform heavy lifting and physical maneuvering.
  • Ability to operate emergency apparatus.
  • Ability to communicate well both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in word processing and computer operations.
  • Thorough knowledge of department policies and procedures.
  • Ability to make sound decisions.

Special Qualifications:

 

  • Must be:
    • AEMT or Paramedic certified with the State of Utah or NREMT.
    • ACLS, BLS, and PALS Certifications.
    • Certified Firefighter I & II in the State of Utah.
    • Certified ADO-Pumper.
    • Certified ADO-Aerial (within 1 year of hire)
    • NIMS 100, 200, 700a, and 800b Certifications.
  • Must have a valid Utah State driver's license. Class B CDL is preferred.
  • Must meet physical fitness requirements as established by the fire department and city.
