About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for a Senior Fire Engineer to join our growing Sydney Fire Engineering team. We are looking for someone who is looking to join a collaborative team working on iconic and exciting projects.

Ideally you will have previous consulting experience on building materials, structure or building, fire systems, human behaviour and safety, and the prevention, detection and suppression of fire.

Sydney have a very strong pipeline of future work. In this diverse role, you will be supporting the Group Leader and Project Engineers, while having the opportunity to gain practical experience working on a variety of project types including retail, hotels, commercial, residential, shopping centres, industrial, healthcare, and education.

Day to day tasks would involve:

  • Development of fire safety strategy and presentation via sketch markups and reports

  • Complete projects in terms of programme, design execution, technical risk management and overall client satisfaction

  • Witness and advise in relation to fire mode response of plant and equipment under different alarm conditions (fire matrix / Cause & Effect planning)

  • Work closely and develop trusted relationships with other project stakeholders, notably architects, contractors, builders and end users to achieve efficient and cost-effective solutions with a high-quality outcome

  • Run and manage your own projects

  • Mentor Junior staff members

  • Prepare drawings and calculations in support of design concepts and determine whether the performance solution complies with the relevant performance requirements of the Building Code of Australia

  • Preparation of Fire Engineering Brief (FEB) and/or Fire Engineering Brief Questionnaire (FEBQ), and develop solutions through to final Fire Engineering Report (FER)

  • Liaise with local authorities, clients and consultant team

  • Attend project meetings

  • Contribute to the overall strategy and development of the Fire team and to our company culture.

  • Adhere to Stantec professional standards, ethics and Stantec quality procedures

What we are ideally looking for:

  • Hold a Bachelor of Engineering – Structural or Fire or Mechanical, or Bachelor of Science

  • Ideally be a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) (Fire Safety) listed on National Engineer Register (NER) or Chartered Engineer through The Institute of Fire Engineers, or working toward this accreditation.

  • Previous experience in Consulting within the Building services industry

  • Knowledge of the Building Code of Australia and relevant Australian Standards

  • Experience in the Preparing Fire Engineering Brief and reports

  • Ability to undertake scientific calculations related to fires, smoke movement and occupant evacuation

  • Ability to independently undertake project and technical analysis

  • Experience in CFD fire modelling and evacuation modelling preferable

  • Experience in the development of Performance Solutions

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong problem-solving skills

  • Ability to prioritise workloads to meet deadlines

  • Positive, can-do attitude and strong work ethic
