GE Healthcare Architect Engineer, Thermal in Waukesha, Wisconsin

Job Description Summary

The Architect Engineer, Thermal will lead all phases of the thermal mechanical product development life cycle for New Product Introductions (NPI), in particular Photon Counting CT Detector. The candidate will own completion of detailed mechanical and thermal designs including modeling/simulation, performance analysis and testing of the detector subsystems.

The individual will work cross-functionally within Detector and System engineering teams, along with Sourcing, Manufacturing, Quality and Service teams. In addition to NPI, this role requires support to quality projects within the Imaging Detectors Platform (CT, PET and X-RAY), current products (IB), and Variable Cost Productivity (VCP) programs.

*This role requires hands-on, onsite work at our Waukesha, WI location.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Engage in all phases of new product development: conceptualization, selection, documentation, functional and detailed design, prototyping, measurement and performance testing, supplier interactions and capability, manufacturing introduction, and service support.

  • Lead development and execution of robust thermal mechanical design, analysis, and evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles while adhering to business & Industry standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements.

  • Work from product specifications and requirements to develop component and assembly thermal profiles, control and specification ranges, geometry, materials, and establish acceptable performance standards

  • Use simulation software to model dynamic temperature scenarios in a variety of operating modes.

  • Use CAD software to produce design elements: 3D models, 2D detailed drawings, thermal/structural models/simulations and analyses.

  • Lead design visualization efforts with 3D CAD models and essential component and assembly details to explore multiple design options

  • Create mechanical component designs and select the proper and cost-effective manufacturing technique; casting, thermoforming, injection molding, welding, machining, sheet-metal fab, additive-manufacturing, adhesives, bolted-joint design

  • Generate high-quality, accurate Bills of Materials and component/assembly specifications

  • Perform complex calculations, analyses, and testing to verify requirements and assumptions

  • Direct the construction and testing of prototype and pilot products; conduct testing and analyze results

  • Serve as a Subject-Matter Expert for thermal architectural design

  • Mentor junior team members

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering from an accredited university or college

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in thermal mechanical design and analysis.

  • Demonstrated design and implementation of fluid-based advanced heat transfer technologies

  • Expertise in mechanical and/or electromechanical hardware architecture and packaging for thermal optimization

  • Experience in creation and implementation of temperature control algorithms, including conceptual design and control schema requirements

  • Knowledge in structural engineering, analysis, testing, and verification of mechanical structures, mechanisms, or electromechanical assemblies

  • Highly adept in the preparation and leadership of Technical Design Reviews.

  • Specialization in component and system thermal modeling using ANSYS or equivalent simulation software

  • Expertise in 3D CAD (Creo) modeling and drawing creation

  • Understanding of material properties, manufacturing processes, and final product assembly

  • Demonstrated project leadership and influencing skills

  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Desired Characteristics

  • Masters of Science in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering

  • Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) Green Belt or Black Belt Certification

  • Prior experience managing documentation in PDM/MWS system

  • Understanding of computational fluid dynamics (CFD)

  • Understanding of theories, concepts and techniques in structural and/or dynamics analysis

  • Knowledge of industry and/or academic practices and standards related to thermal and structural analysis, finite element analysis, and verification testing.

  • Experience in working in regulated industry under quality management system

  • Experience with UL/ETL/IEC design standards and their application in a regulated Medical Equipment industry

  • Self-starter, energizing, results oriented, and able to multi-task

  • Excellent teamwork, coordination and communication skills

  • Ability to meet aggressive reliability, performance, cost, serviceability, and delivery targets

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems

  • Established project management skills
